BIG IDEA: Function

The function of something is the purpose of an object or an activity. How does art function in daily life? How does ceramic art function in relation to other art? Can art be created without an intended function? What is the relationship between the function and the form of a piece? What happens when you create an artwork based on an intended function? How can ceramic pieces function in a group or collection?

THE CURRICULUM

Each of the projects were focused on a specific hand-building process and guided by an enabling constraint.
  • Project Zero
    • Process: Any method you already know
    • ​Enabling Constraint: Create a piece without any additional information
  • Project One
    • Process:Pinch Pot
    • Enabling Constraint: Create 2 pieces without any intended functions that are visually unbalanced (one without preconceived idea & one with a preconceived idea)
  • Project Two
    • Process: Exposed Coil Pot
    • ​Enabling Constraint: Create a piece with an intended function
  • Project Three
    • Process: Slab Pot
    • ​Enabling Constraint: Create a piece that contains some kind of secret
